Just Diagnosed

Most biopsy results return within 48-72 hours. Of course, hearing that you have breast cancer is shocking, and it is difficult to know what questions to ask and even harder to listen attentively to the answers. In most instances, we will tell you your results by phone, at which time we will schedule you for a follow-up discussion with your surgeon, to review the results in more detail and start planning treatment.

We find that most women are not ready for a lengthy discussion at the same time they receive the news that they have breast cancer and a follow-up appointment, after one has time to process the diagnosis, works best. Most women do immediately ask "what stage" their breast cancer is. However, a biopsy does not give us enough information to "stage" a breast cancer. The stage will be determined after the lymph nodes are tested, at the time the surgery to treat the breast cancer.
