Cerumen (wax) Impaction

Cerumen is produced in the ear canal and serves several functions.  It prevents infections as well as provides lubrication to the external canal.  Removal is performed using an operating microscope and various micro-ear instruments including suction and a curette.  Over the counter ear flushing kits or Q-tips are not recommended as they will serve to push the wax into the ear further.  In addition, use of such measures can cause infection as well as damage to the external canal or the tympanic membrane (eardrum).
