Cholesteatoma is a “skin” cyst that is found in the middle ear that can be congenital (since birth) or occur as a result of chronic ear infections.  This cyst can get bigger and infected and affect the middle ear bones and other structures of the ear causing hearing loss and problems with balance.  It can also cause problems with your facial nerve and muscles.
