Epistaxis

Epistaxis is also called “nosebleed” and the bleeding can be mild or profuse.  Nosebleeds can occur spontaneously when the nasal membranes are dry and crack.  This is a common occurrence during the winter months when the air is dry and cold outside and dry and warm inside with heaters.  In addition, patients are more susceptible to nosebleeds when they are taking medications that thin your blood like Coumadin, aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).  Can also be caused by trauma or manipulation, especially in children.  Treatment includes cautery (performed in the office), packing (also placed in the office), or even sometimes requires a trip to the operating room for more definitive therapy.
