Salivary Gland Tumors/Stones

The salivary glands produce saliva to moisten the mouth to aid with digestion.  There are three major salivary glands:  the parotid gland, the submandibular gland and the sublingual gland.  Most tumors in these glands are benign (non-cancerous).  Stones in these glands, called sialoliths, can sometimes block the ducts of these glands and cause the salivary flow to be interrupted causing enlargement of the gland or infection.  Depending upon their location, these stones can be removed through the mouth.  However, occasionally removal of the gland is necessary.
