Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of disorders that cause chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.  Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are the two most common types of these diseases. The exact cause of these diseases is unknown, but the latest research suggests that they may be caused by an abnormal response in the body’s immune system in the gastrointestinal tract.  Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’ disease appear to run in families and certain environmental factors may also increase an individual’s risk for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are so similar that they are often mistaken for each other.  An accurate diagnosis is important in the management and for the most effective treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases.
