The anal sphincter is the circular muscles that are around the anus and help to control bowel movements.  A sphincterotomy is the procedure used to treat anal fissures, often describes as the passing of glass sensation that is felt during a bowel movement.  The procedure is known as a Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy and involves the incising of the anal sphincter with a needle to relax the sphincter muscles during defecation to promote and facilitate healing of an anal fissure.
